Health Care Mobile App with AI Skin Cancer Detection
Healthcare mobile app with AI-powered skin cancer detection, combining intuitive mobile UX with seamless AI integration to support early risk awareness.
What is this?
A mobile health care app with integrated AI-powered skin cancer detection, developed as my Final Year Project at university. In collaboration with one other Computer Science classmate, we built the full mobile app and handled AI integration, while a separate team trained and provided the skin cancer detection model. The app allows users to upload skin images for instant AI analysis, view results with confidence scores, track medication schedule, and access educational resources.

About my role
I was primarily responsible for frontend development in a 2-person team, with my partner handling more of the backend.
- Led the design and implementation of the mobile app frontend
- Built core features including medication reminders, health information browsing, skin cancer detection, and user profiles
- Integrated the AI-powered skin cancer detection via APIs
- Supported backend development when needed and collaborated on architecture, testing, and demo preparation

Challenges & how I approached them
1. Coordinating with another team on different timelines
- The skin cancer detection model was developed by another group, so our progress depended on their deliverables
- We maintained good collaboration through regular catch-ups to align requirements, clarify integration needs, and share updates
- We also built mock responses early to keep frontend development moving while waiting for the real APIs
2. Dividing tasks effectively under tight deadlines and varying skills
- Due to the tight deadline and our complementary skills (I was stronger in React Native while my partner more experienced with Flask backend), we clearly split roles: I focused on frontend, she led backend and AI integration flow
- Supported each other whenever needed and kept open communication to stay on track
So, what was the outcome?
- Successfully delivered a fully functional health care mobile app with AI-powered skin cancer detection
- Completed as a A-grade Final Year Project with positive feedback from the professor
- Created a meaningful tool that demonstrates how AI can be applied in healthcare to help users detect risks and manage their health
Things I learned
- Deepened my React Native skills, especially with native features like camera and album access
- First time designing and implementing a complete React Native mobile app. from scratch
- Gained experience integrating custom third-party AI APIs into a mobile app
- Learned how to collaborate effectively across different teams and specialties, including managing external dependencies and making timely adjustments
